Sugar and starch both
are carbohydrates. Sugars from simple carbohydrate molecules while starches form more complex carbohydrates
linked together by different bonds. There are many differences between both are the same looking terms. Let us have a deep insight into the difference between both of them.
Difference between sugar and starch :
- Sugar is simple carbohydrate while complex carbohydrate
in starch.
- Sugar forms a direct source of energy while Starch forms
storage source of energy.
- Sugar is sweet in taste while Starch is not sweet in
taste.
- Sugar has either no bond or a single glycosidic bond
whereas Starch has many glycosidic bonds.
- Sugar monosaccharides cannot be further digested where
as Starch can be further digested into simple sugars.
- Sugar made of either a single sugar molecule or two simple
sugar molecules linked together by a glycosidic bond while Starch made of
long chains of simple sugars like glucose.
- Sugar is very quick to absorbed while starch is
take a very long time to absorb.
- Sugar increased blood level rapidly while a starch increase
the blood level rapidly.
- Example of sugar: monosaccharides and
disaccharides
- Example of starch: amylose and glycogen
